Protea Archery Club

Protea Sports Club (PSC), with a primary focus on archery, was founded in
1964. Now operating under the name of Protea Archery Club (PAC), but
still on the same premises in Main Road, Retreat, this makes it the oldest active archery club in the Cape Town area. PAC continues to provide a well-equipped home for archers of the central and southern peninsular and, alongside the other sporting codes, takes a leading role in the running of the umbrella organisation of the PSC.

Having facilitated the sport of archery for 60 years (and counting), PAC is the oldest archery club in the Cape Town area. It’s origins stem from a desire to assist in the rehabilitation of paraplegics through the medium of sport, with archery having been the primary focus. In fact, its founding followed a demonstration given to the mayor of Cape Town and other Civic dignitaries of the sporting achievements of a group of successful disabled athletes at the Stoke Mandeville Games and Tokyo Paralympics. With links to the nearby Princess Alice hospital, and with the involvement of physiotherapists from there, the club provided a venue for patients both at the hospital, and after discharge, to immerse themselves in a sport in which they could excel.

Protea Archery offers both indoor and outdoor shooting facilities for archers using the Olympic recurve, compound and bare bows. Our indoor range, in the PSC hall, has 8 to 9 target butts at 18m, with movable butts to create the 9m shooting distance for juniors. Our outdoor range caters for archers shooting from close range, right up to 70m. With 11 or 12 outdoor target butts, we still have space to progress towards our maximum of 24 –
a work in progress!

Beginners to the sport are offered Saturday training classes. Sign up as a member here.

Guidance is also available on equipment and purchases. As with many sports, it is vital to understand the range of archery equipment available and its suitability to one’s level of expertise. Once trained in the safety aspects, and knowledgeable on the correct shooting form and equipment, members are free to make use of the outdoor range at any time. Saturday morning is generally the most active time. Indoor shooting shares the hall facilities with other sporting codes.

During the week, the hall is relatively free, with Monday evenings being specifically set aside for archery usage.

Protea Archery club is fully affiliated into the regional, national and international archery structures. At a regional level, these are the Cape Town Archery Federation and Western Cape Archery Federation. At a national level, all members are automatically signed up as members of the South African National Archery Association. This is the South African link to international governing body called World Archery.

With its affiliations, PAC regularly plays host to club-, regional- and national-level competitions. These are well attended, and a great way to meet with other archers from the broader Cape Town area. Over the
years, member participation in the sport has resulted in number of national champions, Olympians and Paralympians from our ranks.

We invite you to make contact with us and enter into the exciting world of archery.
